Bulgaria’s three national parks cover its highest mountains, are free to enter and have a good network of marked trails and staffed huts. Rila contains Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans at 2,925 metres, and the Seven Rila Lakes, a staircase of glacial lakes reached by chairlift from Panichishte and walked as a loop of four or five hours; it is the most popular day trip from Sofia, often combined with the Rila Monastery, which lies in the adjoining nature park.

Pirin, above the ski town of Bansko, is sharper and rockier, with marble peaks, the knife-edge Koncheto ridge, some 170 lakes and Baikushev’s pine, about 1,300 years old. Central Balkan, along the spine of the country, protects old beech forest and the highest waterfall in Bulgaria, Raiskoto Praskalo, under Botev peak. The walking season is late June to September; snow lingers on the high passes into July.
