India’s national parks are, for most visitors, tiger reserves. Ranthambore, Jim Corbett, Kanha, Panna, Satpura, Bandipur and Nagarhole all sell the same product: a seat in an open jeep or a larger canter, on a numbered zone, for a morning or afternoon drive of about three hours. Seats are released online months ahead and the good zones go first, which is why package tours that include confirmed safari permits are worth their premium.

The Himalayan parks, the Valley of Flowers, Nanda Devi, Great Himalayan, Hemis and Khangchendzonga, are trekking country with a short summer window.
Nearly every park in the plains closes for the monsoon, roughly July to mid-October, and sightings are best in the hot dry months of March to May, when animals come to the water.
