Canada’s park system began at Banff in 1885, around a hot spring found by railway workers, and the Rocky Mountain parks are still its heart. Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay adjoin one another along the continental divide, the Icefields Parkway links the first two, and nearly every tour sold starts in Calgary or Banff town: Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, now reached only by shuttle or tour bus, the Columbia Icefield, Johnston Canyon and winter ice walks.

Quebec’s own provincial system, confusingly also called national parks, puts Jacques-Cartier, Mont-Tremblant and the Saguenay Fjord within reach of Quebec City and Montreal. Bruce Peninsula has Ontario’s clearest water, Cape Breton Highlands the Cabot Trail, Gros Morne a fjord and an exposed slab of the earth’s mantle. Kluane, Nahanni and Quttinirpaaq in the north are fly-in wilderness.
A Parks Canada Discovery Pass covers all the federal parks for a year. The season for the mountain lakes is short, late June to early October, and the larches turn gold in the last week of September. Winter brings skiing and frozen waterfalls to Banff and closes most roads elsewhere.
