Thailand has more than a hundred and fifty national parks, and the ones in this catalogue divide into sea and forest. The marine parks of the Andaman coast are the famous ones: Ao Phang Nga with James Bond Island, the Phi Phi group with Maya Bay, the Similan and Surin islands for divers, Ko Lanta and Tarutao further south. They are visited by speedboat or longtail on day trips from Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak, and the park fee for foreigners, a few hundred baht, is often collected in cash on top of the tour price.

The important fact is the closed season. The Similans and Surin shut from mid-May to mid-October, Maya Bay closes for two months in the monsoon, and swimming there is no longer allowed at all. The Gulf side, with Ang Thong off Samui and Ko Chang near Cambodia, has the opposite weather pattern.
Inland, Khao Yai is the first and best wildlife park, three hours from Bangkok; Khao Sok has the Cheow Lan reservoir and its floating bungalows; Erawan’s seven-tier waterfall is a day from Bangkok or Kanchanaburi; and Doi Inthanon, the highest point in the country, and Doi Suthep-Pui are the standard day trips from Chiang Mai, at their best from November to February.
