The Canary Islands hold four of the parks, with Garajonay’s laurel forest on La Gomera and the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma beside Teide and Timanfaya, and natural parks such as Corralejo and Jandia on Fuerteventura add dunes and empty beaches. On the mainland, Ordesa and Aiguestortes are the Pyrenean pair, Sierra de Guadarrama is Madrid’s mountain, and Montserrat, a natural park rather than a national one, is the busiest of all thanks to its monastery and the rack railway from Barcelona.
Entry is free everywhere; you pay for transport and guides. The high parks are for June to October, the south and the islands for the rest of the year, and the wetlands of Donana and the Ebro Delta for the winter and spring bird seasons.
