The other great rainforest product is the primate permit. Mountain gorillas in Bwindi, Mgahinga and Volcanoes, and chimpanzees in Kibale, Nyungwe and Gombe, are visited in small groups on dated permits that cost hundreds of dollars and sell out months ahead; tours bundle the permit with transport and lodging. In Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia the visit is by river boat and canopy walkway, in the Amazon parks of Manu and Yasuni by lodge stays of several nights. Expect rain in every month, leeches in some, and an early start: the forest is busiest in the first two hours of light. Each page gives the drier months and what a realistic sighting list looks like.
