Phnom Kulen, north-east of Siem Reap, is the sacred mountain where the Khmer empire was proclaimed in 802: a riverbed carved with a thousand lingas, a large reclining Buddha cut from a boulder, and a waterfall with a swimming pool beneath it. The road up is one-way by time of day, so tours leave early.
