Oldest national parks in Indonesia
Indonesia announced its first five national parks together on 6 March 1980: Gunung Leuser, Ujung Kulon, Gede Pangrango, Baluran and Komodo. All had been Dutch colonial nature reserves, Ujung Kulon since 1921, after the Krakatau eruption of 1883 had emptied the peninsula of people. Tangkoko's reserve status goes back to 1919. The system has since grown to more than fifty parks.
