Oldest national parks in Kenya
Nairobi National Park, gazetted in December 1946, was the first national park in Kenya and in East Africa, the achievement of the campaigner Mervyn Cowie. Tsavo followed in 1948, Mount Kenya in 1949 and Aberdare in 1950. Amboseli, though protected as a reserve from the same period, became a national park only in 1974. Kenya banned all sport hunting in 1977.
