Mount Merapi National Park tickets and tours: which one to book

Merapi is the active volcano above Yogyakarta in central Java, and the way most people visit it is the jeep tour: open-topped 4x4s from the villages of Kaliurang and Kaliadem on the southern slope drive the lava tracks of the 2010 eruption to the bunker, the ruined house museum and the viewpoints below the summit, in the sunrise, morning and sunset versions, with the sunrise trip the best for the view before the cloud comes down. The tours from Yogyakarta include the transfer to the jeep base and often combine Merapi with Borobudur at dawn and Prambanan at sunset in a long day, which is the classic Yogyakarta itinerary.

ATV and quad-bike tours run the same tracks, and the night tours drive up to watch the lava glow and the incandescent rockfalls from the dome, which is the sight that makes Merapi special when the volcano is active. The hiking tours climb from Selo on the northern side, the only permitted route, through the night to the Pasar Bubrah saddle below the summit for sunrise; the summit itself has been closed since 2018 for safety, and the trek is guided and registered with the park. Rock-climbing sessions on the old lava cliffs and coffee stops in the slope villages are the extras. There is a small park fee at the trailheads and the jeep base, included in the tours. Independent visitors can reach Kaliurang by bus from Yogyakarta and hire a jeep on the spot.

Visiting Mount Merapi National Park: what you will see

The park was created in 2004 and covers about 64 square kilometres of the volcano's upper slopes, on the border of the Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, around a mountain that rises to 2,910 metres and is the most active volcano in Indonesia, erupting regularly since the sixteenth century and almost continuously in the last decades. Its name means mountain of fire, and it sits in Javanese belief as the counterpart of the sea goddess's realm on the south coast, with the sultan's palace on the axis between them and a court-appointed gatekeeper who watched the mountain from the village of Kinahrejo until the 2010 eruption killed him along with more than three hundred others and buried the villages of the southern slope under hot ash.

That eruption made the landscape the tours now drive: the lava valleys of the Gendol and Kuning rivers, the bunker at Kaliadem that failed to save two people, the museum of a house preserved as the ash left it with the clocks stopped and the motorbikes melted, and the viewpoints where the dome and its plume stand above the ravaged slope. Above the lava fields the forest returns, with pines and casuarinas on the ridges and, higher up, the grass saddle of Pasar Bubrah, the ghost market of Javanese legend, below the summit cone. The lava dome grows and collapses, sending glowing avalanches down the south-west flank at night, visible from the villages and the observation posts. The slopes hold the Javan hawk-eagle, long-tailed macaques, leaf monkeys and the endemic Javan lutung, and the villages of the park's edge grow salak and keep dairy cattle in the shadow of the mountain.

Mount Merapi National Park: best time to go, seasons and hours

The jeep tours run from about 4.30 am for the sunrise slot until dusk, and the night lava-viewing tours go up after dark; the Selo trail is open from evening for the night ascent. The dry season from May to October gives the clearest mornings and the best chance of seeing the summit before the cloud builds by nine; the rainy season from November to April brings afternoon storms, mud on the tracks and closures when the volcano's alert rises, which happens at short notice in any month. The sunrise trip is the one to book. Allow half a day for the jeep tour, or a night for the Selo trek. Borobudur is an hour and a half west, Prambanan half an hour south, and Yogyakarta is the base.
