Croatia has eight national parks and twelve nature parks, and two of them account for most visitors. Plitvice Lakes is a chain of sixteen lakes linked by travertine falls, walked on boardwalks with a boat and a road train included; tickets are sold for a timed entry and the summer slots sell out, so book ahead and take the first hour. Krka, near Sibenik, is smaller and easier, with Skradinski Buk at its centre, a boat to the Visovac monastery island and upstream falls at Roski Slap. Swimming at Krka’s main fall ended in 2021.

The sea parks are reached by boat: Kornati, a maze of bare islands, and Telascica from Zadar and Murter; Brijuni, Tito’s summer residence, from Fazana near Pula; Mljet, with its salt lakes and island monastery, from Dubrovnik. For walkers there are the Paklenica canyons cut into Velebit, Biokovo with its skywalk above Makarska, Risnjak and Ucka. Prices at Plitvice and Krka drop sharply outside June to September, and both are arguably finer in May and October.
