On the mainland, Cotopaxi is a day trip from Quito to the lagoon of Limpiopungo and the refuge at 4,864 metres, with the summit a guided overnight climb when the volcano is quiet. El Cajas, above Cuenca, is a paramo of more than two hundred lakes on easy-to-lose trails. Sangay spans three volcanoes between the Andes and the Amazon, and Yasuni is among the most biodiverse forests ever measured, visited from lodges on the Napo River reached by canoe from Coca. Mainland parks are free, the Galapagos emphatically not. The highlands are driest from June to September.
