From Palermo the Zingaro reserve, an hour west, is the essential day out: a roadless coast walked from Scopello or San Vito lo Capo, with coves for swimming. The salt pans and lagoon of the Stagnone lie near Marsala, and the Nebrodi forests two hours east. Pantelleria is reached by air or by ferry from Trapani. May, June and September are ideal; Zingaro may close on days of high fire risk.
