Bandia is a small fenced private reserve an hour from Dakar and close to the Saly resorts, stocked with giraffes, rhinos, zebras and antelope among baobabs, and toured by vehicle in about two hours; it is an easy family outing rather than a wilderness. Niokolo-Koba, in the far south-east, is the real thing, a World Heritage park removed from the danger list in 2024, with the last lions and the largest antelope, the Derby eland, in West Africa, though animals are thinly spread and the journey long. December to April is the season.
