South Africa does safari two ways. The national parks, Kruger above all, then Addo Elephant and Pilanesberg, have tarred roads, fenced rest camps and gate times, and anyone with a hire car can drive themselves. The private reserves, Sabi Sand and Manyeleti on Kruger’s unfenced western edge, Madikwe on the Botswana border, Amakhala and Schotia near Addo, run open vehicles with a ranger and tracker who may leave the road, and they cost several times as much for far closer sightings.
