England has ten national parks, all of them lived-in, farmed landscapes with no entry gates. The Lake District is the largest and the most visited, with sixteen lakes, England’s highest ground on Scafell Pike and steamers on Windermere and Ullswater. The Yorkshire Dales are gentler, with limestone scars at Malham, waterfalls at Aysgarth and the Settle to Carlisle railway crossing the Ribblehead viaduct. Northumberland is the least populated, and holds the best-preserved stretch of Hadrian’s Wall around Housesteads, along with a dark-sky observatory at Kielder.
