Oldest national parks in Costa Rica
The crater of Irazu was protected in 1955, under a law that reserved the land within two kilometres of every volcanic crater. The national park system proper began in 1970 and 1971 with Poas, Santa Rosa and Cahuita, followed by Manuel Antonio in 1972, created after residents protested against a foreign owner who had closed the beaches, Rincon de la Vieja in 1973, and Tortuguero and Corcovado in 1975.
