Minneriya National Park tickets and tours: which one to book

Minneriya is the park of the elephant gathering, the largest seasonal concentration of Asian elephants in the world, and it lies in the middle of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, half an hour from Sigiriya and Dambulla, so nearly every tour sold for it is an afternoon jeep safari added to a day of rock fortresses and cave temples. Safaris are run in open six-seat jeeps hired with a driver at the gate or booked through hotels and online, and last about three hours; the afternoon slot, from about 3 pm, is when the herds come out onto the grass by the tank, and the morning drive is quieter and cheaper.

Day trips from Kandy or Colombo combine Sigiriya, Dambulla and the safari in a long day; two-day tours from Colombo or Galle spread it over a night in Sigiriya, which is far better. The park entrance fee, paid in dollars for foreigners, is charged per person on top of the jeep, and reputable tours state whether it is included. In the months when the elephants move to nearby Kaudulla or the Hurulu eco park, the drivers follow them, and your safari may quietly switch parks; ask, because Minneriya and Kaudulla are ten minutes apart and the gathering moves between them with the water level.

Visiting Minneriya National Park: what you will see

The park is small, 89 square kilometres of dry forest, scrub and grassland around the Minneriya tank, a reservoir built in the third century by King Mahasen and still irrigating the rice fields of the north-central province. As the tank shrinks in the dry season it exposes a wide margin of fresh grass, and elephants from the surrounding forests converge on it in numbers that can reach two or three hundred on a single afternoon, feeding, bathing and squabbling within sight of a line of jeeps on the shore. This is the gathering, and it is the point of the visit;

at its peak in August and September it is one of the great wildlife spectacles of Asia. The rest of the park holds sambar and spotted deer, wild buffalo, langurs and toque macaques, mugger crocodiles in the tank, the occasional sloth bear or leopard that nobody counts on, and rich birdlife on the water, from painted storks and pelicans to spot-billed pelicans and, in winter, migrant ducks. The forest edges have giant termite mounds and the ruins of ancient irrigation works. The park was a sanctuary from 1938 and became a national park in 1997.

Minneriya National Park: best time to go, seasons and hours

The park is open from 6 am to 6 pm, with safaris in morning and afternoon slots. The gathering builds from June, peaks in August and September and breaks up with the north-east monsoon in late October, when the rains refill the tank and the elephants disperse; from November to May the herds are smaller and often move to Kaudulla or Hurulu, and the jeeps go where the elephants are.

Afternoons are the classic time, but weekends and public holidays bring a crush of jeeps at the peak, so a weekday is worth arranging. Allow three hours for the safari and combine it with Sigiriya rock in the morning. The Polonnaruwa ruins are forty minutes away, and the Dambulla cave temples are on the road back to Kandy.
