Sierra Nevada National Park protects the highest mountains of the Venezuelan Andes above the city of Mérida, and it should not be confused with the Sierra Nevada of Granada in Spain or the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, whose tours dominate any search for the name; almost nothing for this park is sold on international platforms, and the visit is arranged in Mérida. The park's great attraction is the Mérida cable car, the highest and one of the longest in the world, which climbs in four stages from the city at 1,600 metres to Pico Espejo at 4,765 metres, and its tickets are bought online or at the base station, with the upper stages closed when the weather turns.

Mountain guides based in Mérida run day hikes from the cable-car stations, treks of two to five days to the lagoons and the base of Pico Bolívar, and technical climbs of Bolívar and Humboldt for mountaineers with the right experience; the park requires a registered guide for overnight routes. Jeep tours from Mérida drive the páramo road to the Mucubají lagoon and the Pico El Águila pass in the neighbouring Sierra de la Culata. Venezuela's situation makes independent travel harder than it once was, so a Mérida agency that handles permits and transport is the sensible route.

The park was created in 1952, the second national park in Venezuela, and covers about 2,760 square kilometres of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida between the states of Mérida and Barinas, including all the country's highest peaks: Pico Bolívar at 4,978 metres, Humboldt, La Concha, Bonpland and Espejo. The landscape rises from cloud forest through the páramo, the high Andean moorland of frailejones, the velvet-leaved giant rosettes that flower yellow in the dry season, to glacial lakes, scree and the last fragments of Venezuela's glaciers, which have almost vanished in this century.

The cable car crosses all of it in an hour and a half, stopping at La Montaña, La Aguada and Loma Redonda before the top station on Espejo, where a statue of the Virgin faces Pico Bolívar across the void and condors are sometimes seen riding the thermals. From Loma Redonda a trail descends to Los Nevados, a colonial village reachable only on foot or by mule, and from La Aguada paths lead to lagoons in the cirques. The Andean bear and the puma live in the forest belt, the páramo has the Andean fox and the mountain tapir, and the birds include the condor, reintroduced after decades of absence. Mérida itself, the base, is a university city in the valley with the mountains filling every view.

The cable car runs from about 7 am to 2 pm, with the upper stages dependent on wind and cloud, and it is closed on some weekdays for maintenance; check the schedule before you go. The dry season from December to April gives the clearest skies and the best trekking, with cold nights and strong sun on the páramo;

the rains from May to November bring afternoon cloud that hides the peaks, though the mornings are often clear. Altitude is the main problem at Pico Espejo, where visitors arrive from 1,600 metres in under two hours, so drink water and move slowly. Allow a full day for the cable car and a walk, and three to five days for a trek. Mucubají lagoon and the Pico El Águila road are the day trip across the valley.
