Bosnia and Herzegovina has four national parks, and the three here show its rivers and forests at their best. Una, in the north-west near Bihac, was created in 2008 around the emerald Una river: the Strbacki Buk falls, a twenty-four-metre travertine step, the smaller cascades at Martin Brod, and rafting that runs the rapids between them from spring to autumn.

Sutjeska, the oldest park, from 1962, lies on the Montenegrin border. It contains Perucica, one of the last primeval forests in Europe, entered only with a ranger, Maglic, the country’s highest peak, the heart-shaped Trnovacko lake just across the border, and the monumental memorial to the 1943 battle at Tjentiste. Kozara, in the north, is a gentler forested upland with another striking wartime monument at Mrakovica. Keep to marked trails in remote areas, since some land has still not been cleared of mines. June to September is the season.
