The Dominican Republic’s parks are mostly visited on excursions from the resort coasts. Cotubanama, formerly Parque Nacional del Este, includes Saona Island, the country’s most popular day trip: a catamaran or speedboat from Bayahibe, a stop at a waist-deep sandbar with starfish, and lunch on a palm beach. Los Haitises, on Samana Bay, is a drowned karst of mangrove channels and rock islets with Taino cave drawings and frigatebird colonies, seen by boat from Samana or Sabana de la Mar, and often paired with whale watching from January to March.
