Karnataka’s parks belong to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest continuous blocks of tiger and elephant habitat in Asia. Nagarhole, also called Rajiv Gandhi National Park, lies along the Kabini reservoir, where the state-run Jungle Lodges operate boat and jeep safaris, elephants gather on the receding shoreline from February to May, and a black leopard made the forest famous. Bandipur, across the river on the Mysore to Ooty highway, is drier and more open, with bus and jeep safaris from the reception at Melukamanahalli.
