Arizona is the Grand Canyon State, and the South Rim, open all year, is where most visits happen: Mather Point, the Desert View drive, the rim shuttle and the first mile or two of the Bright Angel or South Kaibab trails. It is four and a half hours from Las Vegas and under four from Phoenix, with Flagstaff, Williams and its historic railway closer. The North Rim, higher and cooler, opens from mid-May to mid-October. Grand Canyon West and its glass Skywalk are on Hualapai land, outside the national park.
