Oldest national parks in Croatia
Plitvice Lakes and Paklenica were both declared national parks in 1949, the first in what was then Yugoslavia, and Risnjak followed in 1953. Mljet, of 1960, was the first attempt to protect an entire Mediterranean island ecosystem in the Adriatic. Kornati dates from 1980, Brijuni from 1983, after Tito's death opened his private islands to the public, and Krka from 1985.
