Oldest national parks in South Africa
Groenkloof, proclaimed by President Paul Kruger in 1895 to protect oribi and other game in a valley outside Pretoria, is regarded as the first game sanctuary in Africa. Giant's Castle, in the Drakensberg, was set aside in 1903 for the eland. The Sabi Game Reserve of 1898 became Kruger National Park in 1926, under the country's first National Parks Act, and Addo followed in 1931, when only eleven elephants remained in the Eastern Cape.
