Cape Verde’s protected areas are small, volcanic and walked rather than driven. Fogo Natural Park is the outstanding one: a caldera nine kilometres across, inhabited by the villagers of Cha das Caldeiras, who grow vines in the cinders, with the cone of Pico do Fogo rising to 2,829 metres from its floor. The climb takes three to four hours with a local guide and ends with a run down the ash slopes; the 2014 eruption buried much of the village, which has been rebuilt on the fresh lava.
