Italy's largest national park is Pollino, 1,925 square kilometres of mountain on the border of Calabria and Basilicata, followed by Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni in Campania, Stelvio in the central Alps, and the Gargano promontory. All are inhabited landscapes with dozens of villages inside their boundaries, quite unlike the wilderness parks of other continents, and all are free to enter.
