Pantelleria, the volcanic island between Sicily and Tunisia, became Italy's twenty-fourth national park in 2016, the first in Sicily. Alta Murgia in Apulia dates from 2004 and Sila in Calabria from 2002, both products of the framework law of 1991 that more than tripled the number of Italian national parks. The regional parks of Porto Venere and the Alcantara river were both established in 2001.
