Oldest national parks in India
Kaziranga was reserved in 1905 for the last few dozen one-horned rhinoceroses of Assam. India's first national park, and the first in mainland Asia, was Hailey National Park, created in 1936 in the Kumaon foothills and renamed after Jim Corbett in 1957. Kanha followed in 1955 and Gir in 1965. Most Indian parks date from after the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and Project Tiger, launched at Corbett the following year.
