India's largest national park is Hemis, in Ladakh, 4,400 square kilometres of high cold desert and the best place in the world to look for snow leopards, in February and March. The Desert National Park near Jaisalmer, Khangchendzonga in Sikkim, the Sundarbans and Kanha follow. The famous tiger reserves are much larger than their national park cores suggest, since buffer zones and adjoining sanctuaries are counted separately.
