Germany has sixteen national parks, all free to enter, most of them created since 1990 and still developing toward wilderness. Saxon Switzerland, on the Elbe south of Dresden, is the most striking: sandstone towers, the Bastei bridge above the river, and a web of stairways and ladders, continued across the border as Bohemian Switzerland. Berchtesgaden, the only alpine park, centres on the Konigssee, crossed by electric boat to St Bartholoma beneath the east face of the Watzmann.
