Vicente Perez Rosales, created in 1926 around Lake Todos los Santos, is the oldest existing national park in Chile and one of the oldest in South America. Rapa Nui followed in 1935 and Villarrica in 1940. Torres del Paine began in 1959 as a small park on former sheep estancias and was enlarged in the 1970s, partly through a donation of land by the Italian climber Guido Monzino.
