Poland has twenty-three national parks, small, inexpensive and well marked, with coloured trail blazes and modest entry fees collected at kiosks. The Tatra park above Zakopane is by far the busiest: the road walk to the lake of Morskie Oko and the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch draw queues in July and August, while the high ridges are alpine terrain closed by snow until June. Pieniny, to the east, is known for the raft trip down the Dunajec gorge with highlander boatmen, running from April to October.
