Daisetsuzan, in central Hokkaido, is the largest national park in Japan, 2,267 square kilometres of volcanic peaks that the Ainu called the playground of the gods. Fuji-Hakone-Izu and Nikko follow, both within reach of Tokyo, then Akan-Mashu. Japanese parks are zoned rather than state-owned, and include private land, towns and farmland within their boundaries.
