Oldest national parks in Japan
Japan's National Parks Law dates from 1931, and the first parks were designated in 1934: Setonaikai, Unzen and Kirishima in March, then Akan, Daisetsuzan, Nikko, Chubu Sangaku and Aso in December. Fuji-Hakone followed in 1936. The model was American, but the parks were laid over inhabited land, so hot-spring resorts, shrines and railways were part of them from the start.
