Newest national parks in Oceania
Recent park creation in Australia has been driven by two ideas: marine protection and Aboriginal ownership. Victoria declared a system of marine national parks in 2002, the Twelve Apostles and French Island among them. Worimi, at Port Stephens, was created in 2007 and is owned by the Worimi people and leased back to the state, and the gaps east of Alice Springs are now known first by their Arrernte name, Yeperenye.
