Yellowstone, established by an act of Congress on 1 March 1872, is the first national park in the world. The idea travelled fast through the English-speaking settler countries: Royal, outside Sydney, followed in 1879, Banff in 1885, Yoho and Canada's Glacier in 1886, and Tongariro in 1887, a gift to the Crown from the Tuwharetoa chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV to keep its sacred peaks from being sold. California's Sequoia and Yosemite date from 1890.
